JOHN BURGE, J.D. – CEO & CO-FOUNDER
John is an engineer/attorney-turned-entrepreneur and operating executive. For the last 25 years he has led technology startups and turnarounds in the medical, insurance and litigation verticals, all of which were focused on the re-engineering of information-based processes. John is named inventor on six software patents. Past roles include managing a $400M portfolio of med mal runoff, running a 1600-physicial medical legal consulting firm, founding and running a biomechanics software company for soft-tissue injuries and an offshore medical records abstraction service. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, John was a product liability litigator and served in engineering roles with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Upjohn and the Eastman Kodak Company. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University and a J.D. from Loyola Law School of Los Angeles.
JONATHAN P. POLON, FSA – CHIEF ANALYTICS OFFICER
Jonathan is a pioneer in the application of machine learning and predictive analytics to the life and health insurance industries. After starting as an Actuary at Manulife, then developing models to detect credit card fraud, he founded Claim Analytics in 2001 to bring his skills to the L&H Insurance sector. Jonathan has developed novel mathematical models for more than 40 insurance companies, with applications including: fraud detection, disability return-to-work scoring, worker's compensation claims management, medical claim auto-adjudication and text-mining. He has performed several industry benchmarking studies, including Long Term Disability (LTD) recovery experience in 2011. Jonathan holds a B.S. in Actuarial Science from the University of Michigan and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and frequent presenter at industry symposia.
TIMOTHY GRAVES, J.D. — SENIOR LEGAL ADVISOR & LITIGATION MANAGEMENT EXPERT
Tim is the Former National Managing Partner of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith, one of the two largest Insurance Defense law firms in the U.S. (1,500+ attorneys). He has 30+ years experience as a civil defense litigator, handling cases in Health Care, Elder Law, Personal Injury, Insurance, Medical Device, Complex Litigation & Professional Liability. Tim is a pioneer in litigation management analytics and alternative billing measures. He has consulted with multiple P&C carriers on legal expense analytics and billing structures, and served as lead national counsel for the Farmers Insurance Medical Malpractice Runoff. He holds a B.S in Administrative Justice and a J.D. in Law from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Tim was selected to Super Lawyers in 2012 – 2013 and has served on the board of the Southern California Defense Counsel.
MICHAEL P. CURRAN — BOARD MEMBER & CO-FOUNDER
Michael has 25+ years of P&C/L&H insurance expertise as an operating executive, corporate strategist and venture capital investor. He is the former Director of Strategic Development for the Allstate Corporation (NYSE:ALL) where he ran its’ $90 million corporate venture capital portfolio. Prior to co-founding Portage Holdings, Michael was President and a member of the Board of Directors of a series of analytics, software and services companies serving the P&C/L&H insurance sectors, including CPS Holdings LLC ($400M portfolio of med mal runoff), Quantitative Data Solutions (automated underwriting engine) which was acquired by Aegon (NYSE:AEG) and Magnify Financial Services (predictive analytics) which was acquired by Choicepoint (NYSE:CPS). Michael holds a B.A. in political science from Wittenberg University and an MBA in finance and marketing from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.
ALEXANDER LAMPONE, M.D., J.D. – MEDICAL DIRECTOR AND MEDICAL-LEGAL STRATEGIST
Alex has 25+ years of combined experience as a doctor of emergency medicine, litigation attorney and medical-legal expert. He is the former Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, CA, and currently Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the USC School of Medicine and Medical Director for Medex Healthcare (specialty Workers Compensation managed care company). For 10+ years, Alex has served as a consultant to law firms and insurance companies nationwide on complex, high-exposure cases in the areas of Workers' Compensation, medical negligence, complex personal injury and products liability. Alex received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin where he graduated Cum Laude, and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and Fellow of the American College of Legal Medicine.
STEVEN MANNIK, BOARD MEMBER
Steven is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. Prior to his retirement in 2016, he served as President and CEO of General Re Life Corporation, an affiliate of Berkshire Hathaway, where he also headed the group’s Decision Analytics (Big Data / Predictive Modelling) initiative. Prior to joining Gen Re, Steven was the Executive Vice President and General Manager of Manulife Reinsurance with responsibility for all aspects of Manulife’s reinsurance business worldwide. Subsequent to his retirement in 2016, Steven has been an advisor to and a Board Member of numerous InsureTech startup companies. He is a graduate of the University of Waterloo, where he earned a Bachelor of Mathematics.
ALLAN LUBITZ, BOARD MEMBER
Allan is the former Chief Information Officer at Mercury Insurance, where he set the company’s enterprise technology and digital transformation vision. Allan led the company’s investments in machine learning, data analytics, global IT operations and cyber protection. Prior to Mercury Insurance, Allan served as the Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer at H&R Block/Option One Mortgage. Prior to H&R Block, Allan service as Senior Vice President and CIO at a division of First American Financial that later became CoreLogic. Allan currently serves on the University of California–Irvine (UCI) CIO Roundtable, and serves on several Advisory Boards including UCI’s Center for Digital Transformation. Allan holds an MBA focused on International Business from Loyola Marymount University and a Bachelors of Arts in Biology and Pre–Med Sciences from Hiram College.
BRUCE HALLETT, BOARD MEMBER
Bruce is a co-founder of Miramar Digital Ventures. With over two decades of collaborations with technology entrepreneurs, Bruce co-leads Miramar investments in the Data, IoT and AI markets. Prior to founding Miramar, Bruce was Managing Partner of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison's Orange Country office, where he managed IPOs, venture financings and liquidity events for many high profile technology companies in SoCal including Broadcom, Buy.com, Exult and Applied Semantics (acquired by Google in 2003). Bruce received his BA from UC Irvine and JD from UCLA. From 2007 - 2010, he was chair of the Chief Executive Roundtable at UC Irvine and from 2010 - 2012, Bruce served as UC Alumni Regent on the Board of Regents of the University of California. He currently serves on the University of California’ s Innovation Council and is a member of the UCLA Venture Fund.
